A Month in New Zealand

Following my Fifty Faces exhibition and a few months spent working on commissions that followed on from it I have been working on material for my next show, which will be in September at Bourne End library.

I was keen to have another clear focus for my work and to include a narrative as I did with the Fifty Faces.  This time the theme will be “A month in New Zealand’ following an exciting trip there in February.  I was fascinated by so many aspects of this country; its landscape, its people, the wildlife, the frightening but fascinating effects of earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes and the whole experience of being tourist there.

My work will consider all these aspects and will be a combination of traditional paintings and more experimental responses.  There will be plenty for visitors to reflect on and I hope they will want to linger and will come away feeling as if they, too, have just experienced a month in New Zealand.  Here’s a foretaste…

We spent several hours on a blistering summer's day travelling to Mount Hutt by motorbike. When we arrived the river was a dazzling silver. I couldn't wait to buy some silver paint and re-create that at home. I also loved the distant snowy mountains that seemed such a contrast when the temperature here was in the high twenties.
